4 common household items that may be deadly

We come into contact with dozens of environmental pollutants almost every day. But did you know several of them might be in your own home? Here are a few household items that you might want to double check, and some natural, healthy alternatives:

  1. Air fresheners: Most store bought air fresheners contain phthalates. There’s a wide array of side affects from phthalates, and they are very harmful to people with asthma. An oil diffuser and some essential oils are an excellent alternative. Or, you can put a few drops of essential oil and water into a spray bottle for quick and easy misting.
  2. Candles: Though candles containing lead wicks have been banned, it’s still a good idea to check the ingredient list. You can also drag the wick across a piece of paper. If there is a grayish residue, the wick may contain lead. All natural candles with cotton or silica wicks are the best choice.
  3. Shower curtains: While PVC is fine for use in sewer pipes, carcinogenic compounds may be released when in certain environments, particularly when exposed to heat. Many shower curtains contain PVC or other toxic polymers. A good alternative is a natural cotton or EVA curtain.
  4. Carpet Cleaners: Most carpet cleaners utilize a chemical called perchloroethylene, which is also sometimes called tetrachlorethylene, and it’s been linked to causation of lung cancer. Baking soda or white vinegar are much safer odor and stain removers, respectively. Steam cleaning is also an excellent option for floors.
