When you’re cleaning your home, the last thing you want is to expose your family and pets to harsh chemicals and ingredients. Unfortunately, this is unavoidable when you use conventional household cleaners.
Protect your family by using cleaning products made with non-toxic ingredients, such as all purpose non-toxic cleaner concentrates or chemical-free laundry detergent powders. (h/t to EverydayHealth.com)
Cecile Bascoul, PhD, the director of product safety for the health and wellness company DoTerra, warned that due to the strength and some of the ingredients used, many conventional cleaning products “pose risks to both human health and the environment.”
A 2013 study suggested that many common cleaning products contain dangerous ingredients, such as volatile organic compounds (VOCs), that can harm “the respiratory system and increase the risk of asthma, disrupt the nervous and reproductive systems and heighten the risk of cancer.”
These chemicals are also hard to avoid.
In one study, researchers analyzed 172 consumer products, including household cleaners, for the presence of Prop 65 chemicals or a group of chemicals targeted by the California Environmental Protection Agency (CalEPA) for increasing the risk of cancer, birth defects, or reproductive harm.
The results found that over 60 percent of the products contained at least one hazardous chemical.
Researchers reported that the most common Prop 65 chemicals found in home products were:
However, you won’t always see these ingredients on a product label because manufacturers are not required to make their full ingredient list public.
To protect your family from these harmful ingredients, switch to natural cleaning products designed to be more allergy-friendly, less toxic to the environment and safer for human health.
Samara Geller, the senior director of cleaning science at the Environmental Working Group (EWG), explained that natural products can help “reduce or eliminate hazardous chemicals and provide complete transparency about their ingredients.
Natural cleaning products are usually formulated with plant-based or biodegradable ingredients, which are less likely to cause severe harmful effects than conventional cleaners, added Bascoul. (Related: 5 Toxic ingredients that can be found in common cleaning products.)
Ensure that you’re buying products that are safe to use by checking the ingredients list.
If you’re not sure what to look for, look for a third-party certification, such as the EPA’s Safer Choice, EWG’s Verified Cleaning Products, Ecologo from UL Solutions, or Green Seal (from the organization Green Seal) on the packaging.
Those labels can tell you if a product contains chemical ingredients that are healthier for humans and the environment. There is also more ingredient transparency and each organization determines the standards for those labels.
To illustrate, to get the EPA’s Safer Choice label, a manufacturer must reveal all ingredients in the product. The formulations must also meet EPA standards for safe thresholds of certain ingredients.
And while you’re checking product labels, try to buy fragrance-free products.
Research has revealed that even products marketed as “green,” like glass cleaners, can contain at least half as many VOCs as conventional products and that fragrance-free “green” cleaners were better and contained about eight times fewer VOCs than conventional products.
